LAPA Publishers’ cookbook Onthoukos, compiled by Heleen Meyer, with photography by Adriaan Vorster, was awarded a third place in the international Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2008 in the category First Books at the award ceremony held in Paris, France in July 2009.
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards is the only truly international competition for cookbooks. The award acknowledges those foodies who are also able to “cook with words”. It aims to further knowledge and respect for food and wine appreciation by enabling all cook books to compete on an equal footing irrespective of the language of publication, the size of the market it was aimed at or its relative popular/list appeal.
Onthoukos is a real treasure chest of authentic South African dishes which were discovered all over the country. Onthoukos takes the food reader on a journey of taste, some of which have been lost to time. All the dishes will conjure up aromas, tastes and memories of happy times spent in the kitchen and at the table of mothers, grandmothers, friends and family. This journey goes in search of the aromas of yesteryear, the almost forgotten ingredients and the almost imperceptable element that binds all together: unashamed nostalgia.
A selection of typical South African recipes was included in the book. Cass Abrahams and Ina Paarman need no introduction in South Africa. They shared firm favourites and foolproof recipes like Ina’s Home-baked cheesecake, her celebrated Roasted butternut soup with fresh coriander and Ouma Anna’s Karoo lamb pie. Cass contributed some of her signature dishes such as Denningvleis, Pienang curry and Boeber. It also features cooks such as Atta Jantjies – a cooking legend in her own community.
Other recipes include a Mossel-en-vissop, Blaaibrood, Outydse hoenderpastei met filo-bolaag, Pampoenkoekies met pekanneute en Gebakte appels en pere met ’n krummelkors.
