Prehistoric Plains Dweller Oreodont Jaw Fossil with Teeth
Species: Merycoidodon Culbertsoni
Age: Oligocene (32 Million Years)
Location: Niobrara County, Wyoming, USA
Formation: Niobrara County, Wyoming
Size: Approximately 82mm × 17mm × 49mm
Weight: 85 gram
This authentic fossil specimen is a section of jawbone containing several preserved teeth from Merycoidodon, one of the most abundant mammals that once roamed prehistoric North America. The fossil preserves part of the lower jaw with well-defined molars and premolars still visible. The raised ridges and complex chewing surfaces of the teeth show the powerful grinding structure these animals used to process plants. Even as a partial jaw, the specimen beautifully demonstrates the dental anatomy that helped these mammals thrive for millions of years.
Oreodonts belonged to the extinct family Merycoidodontidae, a group of hoofed mammals that lived from the late Eocene through the Miocene, roughly 40 to 5 million years ago. Although they somewhat resembled pigs or sheep in appearance, oreodonts were a unique evolutionary group of even-toed ungulates with no exact modern counterpart. Merycoidodon is one of the best-known species and likely lived in large herds that roamed open woodlands and plains, feeding on leaves, shrubs, and grasses. Their distinctive teeth and strong jaws allowed them to adapt to a wide range of plant foods. These mammals eventually became extinct around 5 million years ago as climates shifted and new grazing animals evolved.
This fossil comes from the famous White River Formation in Niobrara County, Wyoming, one of the most important fossil-bearing regions in North America. The White River Formation has produced extraordinary fossil discoveries for over a century, revealing a remarkable record of prehistoric ecosystems filled with oreodonts, early horses, rhinoceroses, and carnivorous mammals. Fossils from this formation have played a crucial role in helping scientists understand the evolution and diversification of mammals after the age of dinosaurs.
With its preserved teeth and identifiable jaw structure, this specimen offers a remarkable glimpse into the ancient animal communities that once inhabited the plains of North America.
Add this authentic Oreodont jaw fossil to your collection and own a genuine piece of prehistoric mammal history from the legendary White River Formation.
