Description:
Upright evergreen subshrub with branching stems of ovate to elliptic, softly hairy, grey-green aromatic leaves. Panicles of tubular white or pink flowers with grey-green bracts in summer.

Cultivation:
Very well drained, poor, alkaline soil in full sun. Dislikes wet conditions, especially in winter. Cut back old stems in spring.

Propagation:
Plant 30cm apart; grow from seed or cuttings, though seedlings are delicate and can be difficult to handle. Light soil, tolerates drier conditions. Perennial; can be overwintered indoors in pots where not hardy. Divide clumps in spring or fall.

Design and Other Uses:
Rock or scree garden or containers. Popular culinary herb, traditional for Mediterranean cooking. Long history of medicinal use, often as an essential oil that is produced by distilation.
