BAYERISCHE METALL FABRIK (BMF 1902-1998): The friends Hans Wagner (1874-1952), a sales representative, and Willy Gundel (1874-1954), a businessman, founded Bayerische Metallwarenfabrik GmbH Nürnberg, or BMF for short. The first company headquarters was in Nuremberg. In 1903 the first illustrated product catalog appears under the title Luxury and everyday items in brass, nickel and copper. Specialty: Glass, porcelain and earthenware with metal frames. In 1913, the BMF's first extensive product catalog was published with their range of nickel-plated household and table appliances became decisive for the entire metal processing industry. The period between 1930 and 1938 was marked by a number of setbacks: the BMF was not spared from the poor economic situation. The years in which the National Socialists seized power were characterized by falling export figures and increasing domestic sales figures. In 1939, the BMF's last comprehensive product catalog before the war was published. After the start of the Second World War, exports came to a complete standstill. From the end of 1940, the BMF took on armaments contracts, which were completed with the help of prisoners of war. In 1943 the production of civilian products was banned, which is why the company was completely converted to armaments production. The American bombing raids in February 1945 caused such damage to the Wiesentalstrasse/Steinstrasse building complex that production was relocated to Wolframs-Eschenbach, where a warehouse had already been rented. After the German surrender, the company was closed by the Allies. As early as May 1945, thanks to the advocacy of Belgian and French prisoners of war, the BMF received permission from the American military government to reopen the company in Wolframs-Eschenbach: agricultural machinery was initially repaired there. On the company's 50th anniversary in 1952, Max Wager took over the management of the BMF after the death of his father and took advantage of the economic miracle to expand abroad. Major sales successes at home and abroad make further expansion of the business necessary. Due to the large number of new product models, fold-out brochures are being introduced. in 1980s even after the purchase of the largest competitor, the Quist company, the pressure on the BMF increased: cheap imports from Southeast Asia and rising labor costs in Germany during the 1980s caused sales to collapse by 25 percent. The BMF is countering this development with staff reductions, rationalization, modernization and a focus on merchandise. Internal company differences cause Dr. Norbert Streng left the company in 1990. A year later, Jürgen Koch, a long-time senior employee, bought the BMF, who filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
