Title: Original Hamilton Letterpress Big Printers Drawer 95 Division Printers Tray. Manufacturer: Hamilton, England. Info: Genuine Hamilton Letterpress Typographers Printers Tray, 95 Inserts, from a typesetters workbench. Ready to hang on the wall. The Hamilton Manufacturing Company was started by James Edward Hamilton and began producing type in 1880. Lyman Nash, editor of the Two Rivers Chronicle, asked Hamilton to make letters because he was short on time to order them from Chicago. Hamilton's letters printed so well that he began to take orders from other nearby newspapers. Printers trays were first used in the printing process in 1880 which held the pieces of an alphabet set. Something else that has stuck with us from the early days of printing is how we refer to capital and small letters. In the old days, printers trays were organised in font families and stored in drawers. Small letters were stored in the bottom drawers and capital letters were stored towards the top, hence the terms upper case and lower case. Great for displaying collections or design your own display with whatever appeals, there are no rules on what to display on your printers tray. Includes original Drawer handle with the Hamilton name. With corner guards on all the divider corners. Height: 36cm. Width: 83cm. Depth: 4cm. Condition: Very Good, used working typesetters printers tray, no broken dividers. Price: R 895.00 Inc Vat.
