Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd ([8 September 1901 6 September 1966) - also known as Dr. Verwoerd - was a South African politician, a scholar of applied psychology and sociology, and a journalist.
Dr. Verwoerd played an instrumental role in socially engineering apartheid, South Africa's system of institutionalized racial segregation and white supremacy. He implemented its policies as Minister of Native Affairs (19501958) and as Prime Minister (19581966).
Dr Verwoerd played a vital role in helping the National Party come to power in 1948, as their political strategist and propagandist, becoming party leader upon his premiership. He was the Union of South Africa's last prime minister, from 1958 to 1961, when he proclaimed the founding of the Republic of South Africa, remaining its Prime Minister until his assassination in 1966.
Verwoerd was an Afrikaner Nationalist and a member of the Afrikaner Broederbond, a secret society dedicated to Afrikaner interests. Broederbond members assumed high positions in government upon the Nationalist electoral victory in 1948.

Verwoerd repressed opposition to apartheid during his premiership. He ordered the detention and imprisonment of tens of thousands of people and the exile of further thousands, while simultaneously modernizing, and enlarging the police force and the military.
He banned the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress. It was under him that future president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for life for sabotage.
Dr. Verwoerd's substantial role in the formulation of Apartheid and his efforts to place it on a firmer legal and theoretical footing that have led him to be dubbed the "Architect of Apartheid".
On 6 September 1966, Dr Verwoerd was stabbed several times by parliamentary aide Dimitri Tsafendas. He died shortly after, and Tsafendas was jailed until his death in 1999.

This original South african newspaper poster was published by the Sunday Express to inform the public of Dr Verwoerd's Funeral on 11 September 1966. The poster has a large colour portrait of Dr. Verwoerd, underscored by the word FUNERAL in a white font on a black background.

The poster was twice folded at the time it was originally collected in 1966 but has been stored folded and unopened since then.
The poster was published on standard newsprint, in full colour, and measures 465 mm wide by 600 mm long.
There are the usual minor imperfections along the newsprint margins, a small ink smudge on the right hand side, a small matching indentation in the paper in the top rhs and bottom lhs quadrants, a fold in the top right hand corner, a minor tear on the right hand side margin but otherwise in good condition considering its age.
The poster was stored in a pile of original South African newspapers headlining his assassination and funeral. The periphery of the folds of the poster are slightly affected by yellowing and exposure as a result.
