The design of the Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 is mostly based on plastic but manages to still feel solidly built at the end of the day. The exterior also benefits from one single color scheme that involves a white back combined with an ebony border and front. What I also need to mention is that below the screen placed on the front face you will find four capacitive buttons for Menu, Home, Back and Search. These buttons are necessary because at the time there was no special Android version for tablets, so Samsung had to make sure that the tablet it creates is compatible with the Android platform for smartphones. An unfortunate feature of the design is the battery sealed inside the unit. Because of this feature in order to change the battery you will have to visit a specialized service center. At least you will find on the tablet’s edges all the usual physical controls that are of interest. You will notice the availability of a headphone jack on the top, of a microphone on the left side, of microSD and SIM card slots on the right edge and of dock connectors and speakers on the bottom. The only disadvantage that results from the placement of the physical controls available is that in order to make phone calls using this device you will have to use a Bluetooth headset.

About the proprietary dock that comes along I can tell you that it can be used for charging the device as well as for connecting the tablet to a PC via USB. The downside is that the high voltage required for charging doesn’t allow charging the tablet via the computer USB port to which you connect it. At least you will be able to use this proprietary dock for connecting a keyboard dock or an external display with HDMI via a video output cable. Another interesting touch of the design is the Corning Gorilla glass that covers the display in order to make it scratch resistant. Unfortunately, there’s no oleophobic layer, so fingerprints and smudges will be a constant issue.

When it comes to the hardware made available, I must let you know that at the time of its release the Tab P1000 was comparable with the high end smartphones available on the market. That’s because it makes available the best hardware features possible including an accelerometer, 16GB of on-board storage and the possibility to expand that storage area with the help of microSDHC cards. What you will also find on this Samsung tablet is a 1.3MP front-facing camera and a 3MP rear camera equipped with LED flash and capabilities that allow it to capture 720 x 480 pixel videos at 30fps. What’s more important is the 7-inch touchscreen in place that supports a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels. As you can notice the pixel count is low, but you shouldn’t expect low image quality because the Tab can actually deliver sharp looking text and colors. About the viewing angles ensured I can tell you that they are conventional for a LCD display. They would have been better if Samsung had decided to gift the tablet with an AMOLED touchscreen.

What also matters when examining the hardware capabilities of a tablet is the processor that powers it. The Tab P1000 is equipped with a processor clocked at 1GHz and a PowerVR SGX540 graphics engine that makes sure your Android user experience is smooth and enjoyable. You will even be able to use the tablet for playing 1080p videos and streaming multimedia content to an external display of choice. The battery life provided is not disappointing either. If you use the tablet only for Web surfing and as an eBook reader you will be able to take advantage of it for an entire day on a single charge. The battery life drops to around 5 hours and a half only if you also decide to watch some 1080p videos. In my view that’s pretty impressive
