Biography - Michele Batchelder
I was born in Namibia in 1958. Lived in Cape Town and then Durban where I grew up and was educated. I did a three year Art Course at Durban Commercial High School which I completed in 1976, majoring in ceramics and painting. After leaving school I continued to paint, draw and had a pottery studio, where I taught and produced ceramics for the local art stores.
Once my children had grown to an age where I could follow my passion of painting, I decided to go professional, and was encouraged by the response of the public at the exhibitions I did.
When travelling through this vast country of such beauty, it never ceases to amaze how varied the landscape and people are. I love wide open spaces and big skies. Stormy skies, sunsets and early sunrises!
The stark landscape of the desert and the West Coast, which from stark, bursts into a palette of colour annually, and the ‘jungle-like’ areas along the Wild Coast and hills of KZN. The moody Drakensberg has always been a huge inspiration.
I love to depict the astounding wild life against the backdrop of a magnificent sunset.
I take inspiration from things like looking down from and aircraft….the textures and lines which create our landscape and shoreline.
The feelings created when listening to a musician plying his/her trade. The images I get in my minds eye translates the feelings that music creates for me.
I love textures….and create texture to mimick the feeling of, for example, leather, rock, or sand.
And….. of course ….. people ….. Such colourful creatures! The different cultures and their different beliefs are always an inspiration!
