Stanley Mawelela was born in Zambia in 1973. He is a graduate of the National Art Gallery Workshops, a school jointly run by B.A.T. and The National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

Stanley returned to Zambia where worked with the late William Miko, the Zambian Arts Council President. For over ten years he participated in many group shows, including the Henry Tayali and Mpapa Gallery’s exhibitions. His work was included in the 1993 Annual Heritage Exhibition in Zimbabwe and a solo exhibition in 2000 at Belvedere.

Stanley has been commissioned to do murals for various companies in Zimbabwe, including a large one at The Ethnomusicology, the school of music. He exhibited at POSI+IVE 2006, an event held at Sun City, South Africa, earlier this year, headlined by musician Seal to raise money for the Topologo Aids foundation.

On the 31 August 2006 Stanley exhibited his first solo show at the Moja Modern gallery in Johannesburg (South Africa). This successful show had forty of his best works on display.
