The last, posed studio (J & M Lazarus, Lourenco Marques) photograph of President S.J.P. Kruger on African soil, taken in Lourenco Marques in October 1900 (shortly before his departure on the Gelderland on 20 October, 1900), presumably on the stoep of the Governors (Joaquim José Machado, Governor of the Province of Mozambique) mansion.
A larger (15,5 by 20,5 cm) photograph, originally laid down on board (embossed 'J & M Lazarus, LOURENCO MARQUES) by the studio. The board shows age related wear, with pin holes and cracks. The photograph itself is still crisp and clear.
A historically significant, and emotive photograph, of the President of the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek), taken just before the President's departure to Europe to lobby support for the Boer Republics, against the background of the ongoing Anglo-Boer War.
Joseph Lazarus worked as assistant in the studio of William Caney in Baberton. In 1899 the brothers moved to Lourenço Marques, where they established one of the first photographic studios in the city. During the Boer War, the brothers returned to the Transvaal occasionally to capture photographs of the war. As part of their photography business, they also produced a range of postcards (refer example below, not included in this lot).
