A great deal of the story of the Black people of South Africa has to be told by archaeologists because there were no written records of what the Black people of South Africa did inside South Africa. This book is the first printed to show the complete story of the Black people of Johannesburg and the Southern Western Transvaal long before the gold mines of Johannesburg started in 1880s. Most of the story in this book is in pictures rather than words.
Revil Mason is director of the Archaeological Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand. Revil was born in Johannesburg and has worked on African peoples origins since 1948. Tass Hesom did the drawings in this book. Most of the research was paid for by the University of the Witwatersrand and the Human Sciences Research Council.
