Ornithoglossum parviflorum Seeds

Ornithoglossum is a bulbous or cormous genus in the Colchicaceae family. It consists of 9 recognized species distributed throughout southern and tropical Africa. It is mainly found in arid regions and is most prominent in the winter rainfall areas of South Africa and Namibia. Flowers are usually nodding, yellow or cream, green, brown, purple, or bicolored. Leaves are linear to lanceolate, usually scattered along the stem and clasping. Common names include Snake Lily, referring to the colchicine-type alkaloids that are found in this genus.

Ornithoglossum parviflorum is a South African indigenous species from the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It can also be found in Namibia from where it extends to Namaqualand and the western Karoo to Worcester. It grows to 30 cm and has two to four linear-lanceolate, often undulate leaves and nodding green and purple/maroon unscented flowers. It flowers June through October.
