South African Endemic Perennial Bulb
Ornithoglossum is a bulbous or cormous genus in the Colchicaceae family. It consists of 9 recognized species distributed throughout southern and tropical Africa. It is mainly found in arid regions and is most prominent in the winter rainfall areas of South Africa and Namibia. Flowers are usually nodding, yellow or cream, green, brown, purple, or bicolored. Leaves are linear to lanceolate, usually scattered along the stem and clasping. Common names include Snake Lily, referring to the colchicine-type alkaloids that are found in this genus. Ornithoglossum viride is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province. This extremely poisonous species was previously known as Melanthium viride and Ornithoglossum glaucum. Vernacular names include Cape Poison Onion, Cape Slangkop, Capepoison Onion, Eendjies, Geelslangkop, Kaapse Slangkop, Kaapseslangkop, Karooslangkop, Poison Onion, Slangkop and Yellow Slangkop. It grows to 20cm tall with channeled leaves and from winter to spring it bears brownish-green flowers.
