B ORN in 1874, G. K. Chesterton became one of the most famous literary figures in the first part of this century. Like his friend, Hilaire Belloc, he was a man. of remarkably diverse literary talent. He wrote such famous novels as THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY and created the eccentric, lovable amateur detective, Father Brown. A vigorous thinker, he wrote many volumes on philosophy; but he was always proud to remind people that he was first and foremost a journalist. Chesterton edited several periodicals in which his controversies with men like Shaw and Wells appeared. Behind all his gifts as a writer and thinker was his unfailing zest for life. More than any other of his works it is ORTHODOXY, which Chesterton called a sort of slovenly autobiography, that contains a history of this great mind.
