Growing up to 16 metres tall this rare tree which is perfectly suited to African conditions features the strangest fruit. It is dioecious which means that it gets its fruit from pollinating female and male flowers from different plants. The fruit has a number of interesting names ¿ brains fruit, Horse Apple, monkey¿s balls, and monkey brains. Inside the fruit there is a sticky white sap that contains Elemol which has the same effect on mosquitoes as Deet. The fruit is Yellow-Green and has a faint smell of Oranges, even though the Maclura is a mulberry species. The thorns are sharp and strong and most lethal! The only edible part of the fruit are the seeds.
