Out of Africa is probably the finest book ever written about the nature of the African continent and its people-although at first sight it is not about either of these things. Karen Blixen set out in middle age to record the central experience of her life, in which with her husband she went out to Kenya to manage a coffee plantation close to the Ngong Hills near Nairobi, and continued to do so by herself for ten years after her divorce.
What she achieved, however is a uniquely poignant evocation of a vanishing land and its peoples, whose destiny seems to echo the author's own preoccupations but remains eternally distinct from them.
This superbly illustrated edition brings alive the Kenya of those years: the day to day events on a struggling farm. the often eccentric European settlers, the Afriacn peoples among whom they lived and, above all, the magnificent, wild land in which the story is set.
