"Letcher was born at Redruth, Cornwall on 27th May 1884, and he became a graduate of the Redruth School of Mines, a background which drew him to the gold-mines of the Witwatersrand. He developed a passion for world travel and big-game hunting in Africa, and authored many books. In World War 1 (1914-18) he served with the South African Forces, under General Smuts in South-West and East Africa. He entered the field of mining journalism in the 1920s and for a number of years he was editor of the South African Mining and Engineering Journal. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society.
