" In 1687 the first farms were allocated along the Beg River. During the following year the Huguenots received farms in the Paarl Valley. By the end of the 17th century farms had been allocated as far as Wagenmakersvallei. Paarl, at the foot of Paarl Mountain, was the first town to be established and is still the capital of the region. Wellington and Franschoek were established much later. One of the oldest settlements, occupied by coloureds only, is Pniel. It was founded in 1842. Although geographical features isolated the Paarl Valley to some extent, the community played an important role in spheres such as religion, economics, culture and education beyond the valley's borders."
