The story opens in the 2nd half of the 19th Centuary. It charts the course of South African painting from the descriptive records of the "Africana Painters" through the various experemental forms of modernism. The different styles and individual works of art are clearly illustrated and lucidly explained.
The reproductions - 99 in colour, 229 in black & white have been drawn where possible form public collections. Each artistic term or label is defined when introduced and all are given addictional purport and precision by means of illustrations and examples.
