Pair of Chelsea style figurines with Gold Anchor back stamp. Ref. OR-51
Maker: Unknown, possibly Samson of France
Date: Estimated 1850-1900
History: The Gold Anchor back stamp was introduced by Chelsea , London, from 1758 until 1770. Chelsea copied many of the French Sèvres styles during this period and figurines were shown on typical Rococo scroll bases. Chelseas reputation grew and they targeted the very wealthy including Royalty. Many companies copied Chelsea and its Gold Anchor mark - especially Samson in France around 1845 right through to the 1960s. Although the gold anchor was copied by numerous companies, they were usually larger than the one on Chelsea pieces and in most cases, they added the letter S or some other sign to indicate that this was a copy. The size of the gold anchor on Chelsea pieces is approximately 1/3 of an inch (8mm). The gold anchor marks on the figurines offered are roughly 6mm in size, pretty close to what it should be. However, I do not believe the figurines are Chelsea but more likely to be Samson copies
