Offered for sale are an attractive and striking pair of ceramic King Charles Spaniels made from low fired earthenware and hand painted. These figurines are made in the famous British Staffordshire " Potteries " district. This pair dates to the first half of the 20th Century. Staffordshire animal figurines are highly collectible particularly pairs of mantel ornaments. Traditionally Staffordshire animal figurines were hand painted by unskilled artisans women and children and typically have a freely and spontaneously painted folk art charm . This pair is glazed in a pale cream crackle glaze with the spaniels depicted in tri-colour with black snouts, russet brown patches, ears and tails with gold lockets and chains/leads. These items are slip cast from a mold and are hollow in the interior. The reverse of the figurines shows small air holes from the firing/manufacturing process. The bases have stamped marks .
