Paradise, The Castle & The Vineyard - Edited By Margaret Lenta - 2006 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition.
Lady Anne Barnard lived at the Cape from 1797 to 1802 and was official hostess of the colonial administration for the first two years, after which she continued to play an important role in the social life of Cape Town. She recorded life in the Cape and its hinterland in 1799 and 1800 with more interest and detail than any other writer of her period. Her entries carry frank, witty and insightful observations about life and the people of the Cape, including the plight of slaves (usually censored out of writings from the era) and the Governor and his quarrelsome household.
She also describes her own life, including her marriage to a man twelve years her junior, political upheavals, shipwrecks, slave uprisings and travels into rural areas.
Paradise, the Castle and the Vineyard contains annotations which provide contextual and historical information, anecdotes and insights into Lady Anne’s thoughts and comments, providing the reader with a deeper understanding of her life, times and the people with whom she interacted.
