PARAGON (1897-1991): THE STAR CHINA COMPANY WAS FOUNDED IN 1897 AS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HERBERT AYNSLEY AND HUGH IRVING, TRADING UNTIL 1919, AND USING PARAGON AS A TRADE NAME FROM ABOUT 1900. IN 1919, AFTER AYNSLEY'S RETIREMENT THE COMPANY NAME WAS CHANGED TO PARAGON CHINA COMPANY LIMITED. From April 1933, when Paragon was granted its first Royal Warrant of Appointment by HM Queen Mary, the Company incorporated in their trademark or backstamp, the arms of the Royal Warrant Grantor(s). During this period dating can be estimated from the Royal Warrant information. PARAGON WAS NOTED FOR PRODUCING HIGH QUALITY TEAWARE AND TABLEWARE AND EXPORTED A LOT OF ITEMS TO AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH AFRICA THE 1960S SAW THE COMPANY CHANGE HANDS SEVERAL TIMES, OWNED in 1960 FOR A WHILE BY T.C. WILD (Called Royal Albert since 1904), THEN FORMING PART OF ALLIED ENGLISH POTTERIES in 1964, THEN BECOMING PART OF ROYAL DOULTON IN 1972. Royal Doulton continued the use of the Paragon name, but by 1989 the name and patterns had generally been absorbed into Doulton's Royal Albert brand. Doulton discontinued use of the Paragon name from c.1991. Some Paragon patterns continued in production under Royal Albert name until the Royal Albert name was discontinued by Doulton.
ROYAL WARRANTS: The Queen (Mary) and other members of the Royal Family were attracted by the Paragon designs and regularly ordered it for use in their own households or as gifts for others. In April 1933 Paragon was honoured by being granted a Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen (Mary grandmother of Queen Elizabeth). Royal Warrants may be granted to people or to companies who regularly supply goods or services to a particular member of the Royal family. Strict regulations govern the warrant, which allows the grantee or his company to use the legend 'By Appointment' and display the relevant Royal Coat of Arms on products. In 1938 the company was similarly honoured by the new Queen wife of King George V, Queen Elizabeth (mother of Elizabeth II), and in turn, her daughter, Her Majesty The Queen (Elizabeth II) granted a Warrant of Appointment in 1953.
