The Parrot's Beak plant, or Lotus berthelotii is a plant that always turns heads. With its fine, silvery trailing foliage and fiery orange-red flowers, it adds colour and texture wherever it grows. Perfect for hanging baskets, containers, or sunny spots, this is a plant that's as unusual as it is beautiful.
Commonly known as: Parrot's Beak plant, Coral Gem
Botanical name: Lotus berthelotii
The Lotus berthelotii is a truly unique trailing plant, loved for its silvery, needle-like foliage and vibrant flowers that resemble a parrot's beak. Native to the Canary Islands, it thrives in sunny, well-drained conditions and makes an excellent choice for hanging baskets, window boxes, or trailing over containers. When in full bloom, the bright orange-red flowers contrast beautifully with the soft silver foliage, creating a dramatic display.
Light:
This Parrot's Beak plant loves full sun and will perform best when it receives at least 56 hours of direct light daily. In shadier positions, flowering will be reduced, and growth may become leggy.
Watering:
Lotus berthelotii prefers consistent but moderate watering. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings, and avoid waterlogging. It's more tolerant of dryness than soggy soil.
Temperature & Humidity:
Best in warm conditions above 15°C. It is sensitive to frost, so in colder regions it's often grown as a seasonal annual or brought indoors during winter.
Soil & Repotting:
Plant in free-draining soil. Our Aroid Mix works well when blended with extra Perlite for faster drainage. If growing in containers, make sure they have drainage holes. Adding Bark Chips helps aerate the soil.
Fertiliser:
Feed every 23 weeks during the growing and flowering season with a balanced fertiliser. Use our Controlled Release Fertiliser for steady growth, and alternate with Organic Fertiliser to encourage abundant blooms.
Pests:
Usually hardy but may attract aphids or spider mites in dry conditions. Treat with insecticidal spray if needed.
With its silvery foliage and fiery flowers, the Lotus berthelotii is a stunning addition to any plant collection especially in hanging baskets where it can trail freely.
