FRESH SEED - 2013 HARVEST!!!
PARSNIP WHITE GEM - Pastinaca sativa
Parsnip White gem is a very white fleshed tried and tested variety suitable for different soil types. For long roots, a deep soil is essential. The plants prefer a cool growing season, and take 4 months or little longer to mature. Two plantings a year are possible, early spring and early autumn.
A month before planting seeds directly, add very well rotted compost or manure to the soil. Remove stones and clods. The optimum soil pH for parsnips is between 5.5 and 7.
Rake soil to a fine tilth. Make shallow furrows (5 cm deep) about 25 - 30 cm apart. Sow seeds about 2 cm apart. Cover with a fine layer of soil, firm in well, water. Keep seeds damp while germinating. Once seedlings are well established, water plants with a deep soaking water once a week to encourage long tap roots.
To harvest, carefully uproot with a garden fork. Parnips do not pull easily.
