Description: Part of an ancient Roman/Syrian Kohl flask Ref. GL-12
Maker: Roman, Syrian
Date: Difficult to estimate, possibly 4th Century A.D.
History: This is a glass double cosmetic flask used for Kohl, Roman or Syrian in origin and hand blown. Known as a double Balsamarium they were used for Kohl, perfumes, special oils etc
Description: Translucent blue-green colour, folded in rim. The flask is likely to have been made in one long tube which was then folded in half and the sides attached. Note the very thick glass at the base as against the thin glass at the top ends. Most likely the flask would have had two handles attached to the top.
Look carefully and you will see spiral marks on the larger section. Slight iridescence on the glass confirms its age. Note the immense number of bubbles in the glass.
Condition: Damaged as shown in the photos with much of the second tube missing. Weather-worn on the outside and not cleaned.
Dimensions: 9.7 cm in length, 4.1 cm in width, 3.5 cm in height
For comparison Google ancient roman glass kohl container and you will see a fair number of different (undamaged) flasks, but, at a much higher price!!!
Price: R650.00
