Parthenocissus is a genus of tendril climber plants in the grape family, Vitaceae. It contains about 12 species native to the Himalayas, eastern Asia and North America. Several are grown for ornamental use, notably Parthenocissus henryana, Parthenocissus quinquefolia and Parthenocissus tricuspidata. The name derives from the Greek parthenos, "virgin", and kissos (Latinized as "cissus"), "ivy". The reason is variously given as the ability of these creepers to form seeds without pollination or the English name of Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Virginia creeper, which has become attached to the whole genus. Parthenocissus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Brown-tail and The Gothic.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata var. Veitchii is a deciduous vine, native to China and Japan. In milder areas it behaves as a semi-evergreen. This variety of Boston ivy has shallow-lobed leaves, creating a jagged appearance. The leaves change colour in autumn to a fiery dark red-purple before they drop in winter. It makes a much more decorative plant for a wall or pergola than the normal species Parthenocissus tricuspidata, which has only plain three-lobed leaves. 'Veitchii' makes a good textured covering for any large sunny surface, and can even be used in a large garden as ground cover among shrubs. This vigorous self-clinging climber will grow on most soils but prefers a fertile well drained medium. Plant it in autumn or spring, with plenty of compost, up against wall or a fence. Plant Strengths: Attractive autumn colour; All round tough plant suitable for problem areas; Ideal for fast growing screening; Suitable for container growing; Tolerates full sun and sandy, drought-prone soils; Tolerates cold exposed locations; Tolerates heavy clay soils.
