These dolls are representations of King George VI and his consort, Queen Elizabeth, in their coronation robes of 1937. Before the coronation, as the Duchess of York, the press named her the “Smiling Duchess.” Up until then royalty never showed emotion or smiled in public. This is probably the reason why this doll of Queen Elizabeth was made with a broad smile. After the king’s death in 1952, as the Queen Mother, she lived to be 101. She died in the year of her daughter, the present Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee. These two dolls are in good condition, with only the white of their robes showing some “browning,” due to age. They formed part of an exhibition, so their feet are glued onto pieces of cardboard, which I have left in situ. They both have their swing tags attached to their wrists. Please add R28 for postage.
Please note I will be unable to post parcels between 19th to 30th August, as I will be on holiday. Please bear this in mind before bidding on any of my auctions.
