In 1957 Hugh Tracey was invited by the Rhodes Livingstone Institute to record the music of the Tonga people living in the Zambesi valley prior to flooding the valley to fill the then new Kariba dam. This part of the country had remained relatively untouched by civilisation and remained much as Livingstone had described them a century before. Author gives an evocative picture of the short ten-day trip.
