Pennyroyal is not a culinary herb, but it is worth growing for several other reasons. Mainly, it is one of the best natural insect repellents, and it smells better than many commercial insect repellents. It is a durable plant which will survive periods of neglect. I love the smell. Sow pennyroyal seeds in spring to have plants in the current growing season or in late fall if you want plants first thing the following spring. Barely cover the seeds with soil, planting them only 1/8th of an inch deep. Grow pennyroyal in full sun or partial shade. Pennyroyal is adaptable to many light conditions, but does not thrive in full shade. Keep the soil around pennyroyal moist. Pennyroyal can tolerate periods of drought, but for best results with the herb, water once every few days to keep the soil moist.
