Persepolis Persian Carpet Bazaar was established in 2006 in Pretoria by Mahdis Hartley, an Iranian by birth who has grown up in the industry and is a total authority on the subject. Salie was a South African diplomat posted to Iran to serve in the South African embassy which he did for 7years. In this time he developed a passion for the Iranian/Persian culture and history. In his leisure time he studied and learnt the methods employed for centuries of how to spot rare and supreme quality Persian rugs,carpets and Kelims.Trading in these superb items was a natural progression from the tutorship of the family of his wife Mahdis whom he met and married in Iran. His father in law is an internationally known trader of extremely rare antique persian carpets and related items. The couple travel to Iran regularly to source and choose the best quality items directly from the weavers covering vast areas from rural villages to major centres where the most superior quality and rare items are found.These carpets are woven in the traditional manner by hand with the most basic hand operated looms thereby creating the most unique style with each and every carpet having its very own characteristics, as expressed by the individual weaver.The name Persepolis is derived from the ancient persian city created by the king of kings Darius I in 518BC. The ancient city is home to modern culture worldwide and yet the tradition of carpet, rug and kelim making is as though it never evolved into our modern era, the item on display is as traditional and unique as in the time of Darius I.

DESCRIPTION: A SHIRAZ carpet is a type of Persian rug made in the villages around the city of SHIRAZ in the Iranian province of FARS. The designs come from settled tribal weavers who mimic Qashqai, Khamseh, Afshar, Abedah and Luri designs. Since weavers use fixed looms the rugs are larger and coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz rugs are not often very finely knotted, both Qashqai and Abedah designs have the finer knot out of the SHIRAZ range. The weavers of the SHIRAZ utilises the Persian asymmetrical knot and create a geometric design sometimes featuring a pole medallion in the centre. Red and brown colours are often used with diamond-shaped lozenges as the primary motif.
