PETER SIBEKO CHARCOL ON PAPER, SIZE 30CM BY 25CM UNFRAMED

Peter Sibeko

Sibeko was born on 22 July, 1940 in Soweto. He comes from a family of nine children and was encouraged by his brother, Walter and artist friend, David Mbele to become a professional full-time artist.

Sibeko, who is self-taught, started drawing at the age of twelve, and has since become a well-known artist and the owner of Soweto Art Gallery in central Johannesburg. Through his interest in South African art, his gallery has become an important venue for young artists to exhibit their creative work.

Since 1980, Sibeko’s work has been included in various group exhibitions which toured overseas. In 1989 he participated in an exhibition titled ‘Soweto Images’, which was on show in London. In the same year his work was included in an exhibition held in Georgia, in memory of Dr Martin Luther King. His first solo exhibition was held in 1990 at the Friends of the Earth Gallery in Australia.

Sibeko portrays township life in Soweto in oils on sand- a mixed medium which he has developed with great success. He also works in pastels, water colours, charcoal, oils and pencil.

His work is represented in the collection of Absa Bank, as well as in many private collections in South Africa and abroad.
