Artist's Biography

Peter Sibeko

Peter was born in 1940 in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

He studied at the Methodist Primary School in Orlando, Soweto, where his teacher encouraged him to draw. Other than that he his mostly a self taught artist.

He is an artist who produces stylized and abstracted figures in mixed medium, sometimes making use of mine dump sand in his art. His main subject matter is scenes of township life within Soweto.

Peter's works have been exhibited in various galleries in Europe, the USA, Australia and here in South Africa. Litchi Gallery in Athens; ACFF Centre in Nottingham, England: Friends of the Earth Gallery in Melbourne in 1990; Soweto Images in London in 1989; Atlanta Athlope University; Exhibition in memory of Martin Luther King in the USA.

He has also exhibited in New York, San Francisco, the Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and the Henry Thomas Gallery in the Carmarthen College of Art in England.

Peter runs his own Gallery, "The Soweto Art Gallery" in Johannesburg, South Africa. His gallery has also been instrumental in opening up market opportunities to other Soweto artists.
