"Petticoat pioneers celebrates the lives of all the women who shed in the shaping of early Kimberley.
When diamonds were discovered, men from all over the globe arrived dreaming of untold riches. With amazing rapidity a canvas city erupted which housed thousands of men. At first however there were very few women and a digger's life was exceedingly rough and ready. Soon word spread of spectacular finds and women began to converge on the diggings, first of all the barmaids, some chaste, some making a living by practising the oldest profession. then came the wives, mothers, sisters and daughters and the gentling of this turbulent population began.
It was a hard life unsuited to ladies who had come from kinder climes. Mortality was high, especially among children, and mothers suffered the agonising loss of a child and sometimes two or three within days or weeks.
But the indomitability of the human spirit shines through the letters, diaries and other accounts of many remarkable women, often unknown and unsung.
This book loving researched and written and lavishly illustrated, introduces the reader to the rich and varied lives of the Petticoat Pioneers."
