Hy is gebore in Utrecht en beleef sy grootwordjare in Natal. Pampata, die beminde van koning Tsjaka (in Engels vertaal as Phampatha, the beloved of king Shaka) vertel die geskiedenis van Tsjaka soos gesien uit die gesigspunt van Pampata. Die verhaal dek Tsjaka se lewensloop van sy kleintyd af, toe hy teen veel groter seuns moes leer veg en reeds toe sy buitengewone vaardighede bewys.
