Archibald Thorburn (1860 - 1935) was an outstanding illustrator of animal life and in particular of the birds of Western Europe. The fifth son of the great miniaturist Robert Thorburn, he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880. He wrote and illustrated four titles of his own, the first of which was the four volume "British Birds" published in 1915-16 which is renowned as a classic of ornithology.
Coalport, Shropshire, England was a centre of porcelain and pottery production between about 1795 and 1926, with the Coalport porcelain brand continuing to be used up to the present.
The company often sold its wares as Coalbrookdale porcelain, especially the pieces with flowers modelled in three dimensions, and they may be called Coalport China.
In 1926 production moved to Staffordshire, the traditional centre of the ceramics industry in Britain, and, although the Coalport name was retained as a brand, in 1967 the company became part of the Wedgwood group.
