PHILATELIC TRIBUTE NELSON MANDELA 1994-1999
The booklet is a philatelic tribute to President Nelson Rolihahla Mandela, reflecting some of his public life since his release from detention in 1990. The stamps featured in the booklet were issued in celebration of the presidential inauguration in May 1994. It bear's a portrait of President Mandela, and was a part of a set of four stamps each reflecting a different aspect of the inauguration. These include the national anthem's, the new South African flag and the Union Building in Pretoria. The second stamp, as a part of a set of ten, was issued in 1996 in honour of South Africa's Nobel Laureate's from 1951 to 1993. Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for the role he played in leading South Africa peacefully into a new political era. The third, a miniture sheet, was issued in June 1999 in commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the Order of St John. It features President Mandela, who is a knight of Grace of the order, wearing the mantle of the Order. The national headquarter's the Order are shown in the background.
