PHILLEMON IS REPRESENTED BY THE EVERARD READ GALLERY

Phillemon Hlungwani: A Masterful Storyteller.

Born in 1975 in the picturesque Thomo Village, Limpopo Province, Phillemon Hlungwani's artistic journey began with an innate talent that flourished through dedicated training. He honed his skills at the Johannesburg Art Foundation and Artist Proof Studio, later refining his expertise in printmaking and art education at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Hlungwani's oeuvre is a testament to his heritage and community, as vibrant prints and large-scale charcoal drawings transport viewers to the heart of his world. Landscapes, figures, and everyday scenes are woven together with the wisdom of Xitsonga proverbs, inviting us to revel in the beauty of his culture.

A celebrated artist, Hlungwani has participated in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows with Everard Read in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and London. His accolades include the prestigious King Korn competition (2000 and 2001) and the SABC Radio Station Munghana Lonene FM Log Design Award (2003).

Hlungwani's works are treasured in esteemed collections, including Ellerman House, the Irma Stern Museum, and prominent institutions such as Bidvest, Nando's, Nedbank, Standard Bank, and Unisa. His talent has also been commissioned for murals at the Standard Bank Art Gallery and Bell Dewar and Hall.
