With its bold, dark leaves, the Philodendron Black Cardinal is a hardy, easy-care indoor plant that brings striking colour to any space.
Pot Size: 14cm
Commonly known as: Philodendron Black Cardinal
Botanical name: Philodendron erubescens 'Black Cardinal'
The Philodendron Black Cardinal is a true conversation starter. Its broad, oval-shaped leaves emerge a rich burgundy and deepen to a dramatic, almost black hue as they mature. This striking plant adds a bold, modern edge to any indoor setting and looks incredible whether paired with other foliage plants or standing solo in a statement pot.
Unlike vining philodendrons, the Black Cardinal has a self-heading, upright growth habit. It forms a neat, clumping shape that works well on shelves, desks, or as a floor feature in bright corners. Its thick, leathery leaves aren't just good-looking they're hardy too, making this a fuss-free option for plant lovers of any experience level.
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but adapts comfortably to light shade. It enjoys consistent moisture during the warmer months but dislikes sitting in water, so always allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings.
It's also known for being a reliable air-purifier, removing common indoor pollutants while bringing lush, dark foliage into your living or working space.
The Black Cardinal pairs beautifully with other bold-leaf plants like Philodendron Imperial Red or Monstera deliciosa for a varied foliage display.
Light:
The Black Cardinal prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause leggy growth and faded colouring. A position near a window with filtered light is ideal.
💧 Water:
Water when the top 35cm of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering this is the quickest way to run into problems like root rot. In summer, you might water once a week, while in winter you can stretch it out a bit longer. Always empty any excess water from saucers.
🌱 Soil & Repotting:
For optimal drainage and healthy roots, you can use our premixed Aroid Mix, or you can create your own potting mix using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite. When repotting, it's a good idea to include a layer of Bark Chips for added aeration and to mimic the plant's natural environment.
🌡 Temperature:
Keep your Black Cardinal in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. It won't tolerate cold drafts or frost, so avoid placing it near open windows during winter.
🌸 Humidity:
While it enjoys higher humidity levels, this plant will cope with average indoor humidity. If your home is particularly dry in winter, an occasional misting or placing it near other plants can help.
🌿 Fertiliser:
During the growing season (spring to early autumn), feed once a month with a balanced organic fertiliser. In winter, feeding isn't necessary as the plant slows down.
🐛 Pests:
Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Wipe leaves regularly to keep them clean and catch any early signs. If needed, treat with a gentle insecticidal spray.
🪴 Styling Tip:
With its dramatic, dark foliage, the Black Cardinal pairs beautifully with lighter, variegated plants or trailing greenery like Pothos or Monstera adansonii.
