Phoenix at Coventry. The building of a cathedral by Basil Spence.
Published by Geoffrey Bles Ltd, London October 1962 (First Edition)
This is a book written by Basil Spence, the architect of Coventry Cathedral written just prior to the opening by the Queen in 1962 and provides fascinating insights into the architect's original plan and its execution which was not without its problems. For those who have visited the Cathedral it would be a useful book to read as it would encourage them to re-visit with more understanding and would be particularly beneficial for those yet to visit.
This hardcover book is in a reasonably good condition and still has its dust cover that has definite signs of use but is still in a fairly good condition. It has protected the book very well. The cover looks as good as new with the colours and gilded lettering in a perfect condition as the pictures above clearly show.
The binding however does show the beginnings of coming loose and could benefit from being seen to by a conservator to prevent further wear to this stunning book.
The pages are in a good, clean and crisp condition with hardly any yellowing of the pages except for the first few pages and around the edges when the book is closed that shows signs of foxing.
This book has some stunning photography and images, that are well preserved.
A great book for lovers of architecture and history.
