Product Information
This is the oval leaf Buchu, a blackcurrant-scented herb that stimulates and cleanses the urinary system and increases perspiration. The active ingredient is diospheno or barosma camphor which is a potent antiseptic and diuretic. It is used internally for urinary tract infections, especially prostatis and cystitis; digestive problems, gout, rheumatism, coughs, and colds. It is sometimes also included in weight loss formulas for excessive water retention problems. It is often combined with Althea officinalis (Marshmallow) for best results. It is also used with Artemisia afra (African wormwood) to flavour brandy and wine. Buchu brandy and wine is consumed extensively especially in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Buchu occurs only in South Africa and has a restricted natural distribution area in the mountains of the Western cape Province. It is cultivated on a small but increasing scale and is mostly wild harvested.
