This substantial bound volume brings together an exceptional sequence of original Picture Post magazines published during one of the most dramatic periods of the Second World War. Covering the period from 23 March 1940 to 29 June 1940, the collection provides a remarkable contemporary record of Britain and the wider world during the opening months of the conflict.
Published by Hulton Press,Picture Post revolutionised photojournalism through its compelling photographic essays, outstanding journalism and striking cover designs. Under the editorial direction of Stefan Lorant, the magazine became one of Britain's most influential illustrated weeklies and today remains an invaluable primary source for historians, collectors and enthusiasts of World War II history.
This bound volume contains the following original issues in chronological order: 23 March, 30 March, 6 April, 13 April, 20 April, 27 April, 4 May, 11 May, 18 May, 25 May, 1 June, 8 June and 29 June 1940. Please note that the weekly issues dated 15 June 1940 and 22 June 1940 are not present in this volume, making the sequence incomplete for June 1940. Despite these two missing issues, Picture Post represents an outstanding run from a pivotal period in history.
Within its pages are superb photographic features covering wartime Britain, military operations, international affairs, fashion, society, everyday life and contemporary advertising. The iconic covers and documentary photography have become highly sought after by collectors, reflecting the magazine's enduring influence on twentieth-century journalism and visual storytelling.
Picture Post magazines have been professionally bound into a sturdy blue cloth library-style volume, preserving the original issues while creating an attractive and practical reference work. Bound wartime volumes such as this are increasingly difficult to source and are especially desirable to collectors of historical periodicals, military history, British publishing and vintage photography.
Whether acquired as a research resource, an investment in historical ephemera or an attractive addition to a World War II collection, this volume offers a fascinating snapshot of the world as it appeared through one of Britain's greatest illustrated magazines.
