An honest, revealing and riveting autobiography of an unusual and vastly talented artist, who, after he painted his first portrait of Queen Elizabeth in 1954, became the most widely-known artist in the world. Already a much-admired artist in Italy, he was unknown in England when he first came to London in 1949. He hawked his work around the Bond Street Galleries and was rejected by everyone. But before he went home to Florence he submitted a selfportrait to the Royal Academy for its Summer Exhibition. It became the Picture of the Year and he became famous overnight.
With many black and white photographs from the artist's life and his most famous works.
