Already a much-admired artist in Italy, he was unknown in England when he first came to London in 1949. He hawked his work around the Bond Street Galleries and was rejected by everyone. But before he went home to Florence he submitted a selfportrait to the Royal Academy for its Summer Exhibition. It became the Picture of the Year and he became famous overnight.
