Pascale Veerman's marriage and fast lifestyle falls apart when they find out she can't have children. Her lawyer-husband has an affair, and opts out. She is devastated, and heads down to the small Eastern Cape town to her grandmother who she hasn't seen in some years. Unfortunately she has an absolutely impossible bullterrier called Piggy, who will not be allowed into any kennels as he has a terrible reputation for killing other animals. She is forced to take him with her in her Porsche, and even though he is under sedation the trip isn't easy. Her grandmother is kind, but firm, and just what Pascale needs. She pushes Pascale in to attending the local church, where everyone seems to be a misfit recovering from something in their lives. She meets Callum Moriarty, an Irish expat who is a musician, biker and jack-of-all-trades, much to her horror. He has a deep love of children and has taken some young juvenile delinquents in to rehabilitate. Her grandmother has a diabolical cat, Stafendas, who sorts Piggy out in no time, and slowly Pascale starts finding the road back to herself. The novel looks at the parallels between Pascale's demon dog and Callum's boys, and not giving up on people you love. It also looks at her troubled relationship with her mother, and finding her own voice.
