Pinder, Bourne & Co rare 'Dulcamara' pattern plate Dated 1863 Ref. C1
Thomas Pinder started business, in 1849, as an earthenware manufacturer at the Swan Banks Works in Burslem Staffordshire. Little is known about the early history of the company, but, we find that the company, in 1851, is now called Pinder, Bourne and Hope. In 1862 it changed again to Pinder, Bourne and Co. In 1877 Henry Doulton, of the Lambeth Pottery Company, was approached by Shadford Pinder, proposing he become a partner in the firm of Pinder, Bourne and Co for an outlay of £12,000 but the money was unwisely spent and differences of opinion caused such a rift between the two concerns that only arbitration could resolve the matter The name, Pinder, Bourne and Co. had been kept, however, in 1882 it was renamed Doulton & Co. Pinder retired from the business at this time. John Slater was the art director at Pinder Bourne, and, having travelled extensively around the European potteries, convinced Doulton to produce china as well as earthenware.
The above plate is earthenware, transfer-printed in black and hand-painted in a rust-red and orange-brown lustre with pink 'leaves'. On the back of the plate is the printed Pinder, Bourne and Co. mark (identical to the Pinder, Bourne and Hope mark) with the pattern design 'Dulcamara'. The impressed name, Pinder, Bourne & Co. is also found, and the printed initials 'G & AMB 1863. Dulcamara is not recorded in Coysh and Henrywood (1984, 1989). The pattern consists primarily of a border design that has been described as consisting of 'stylised leaves'.
The plate remains in excellent condition with little sign of wear. The glaze is fairly thick, with some 'orange peel' effect due to numerous minute bubbles. The diameter of the plate is 23.5 cm.
