ADDITIONAL HISTORY:
Wartime Concentration Scheme
The Second World War proved to be a difficult period for the British pottery industry because of the restrictions on colored pottery production during the Wartime Concentration Scheme. These were to become luxuries generally denied to the home market, but some production would continue for sale abroad to earn foreign currency. The domestic market soon got used to plain, undecorated tableware. In 1941, British pottery production was subject to a Concentration Scheme (With the A and B incorporated into their markings) maximum, retail prices were then set. Some restrictions were relaxed and revised in 1945. This supply order created additional letter groups. Johnson Brothers fell under Group Three and, BY was added to their mark during this period. With restrictions revised or lifted, colored pottery known as FANCIES came out for sale to the home market.
