The writer has an eye and a memory for authoritative detail and there are literally hundreds of colourful anecdotes throughout, including his trek to Johannesbrug by ox-wagon 1889. His Anglo-Boer War experiences make one feel that, with classmates fighting on either side and resuming their friendly intercourse in after years, the war could be described as an old-fashioned just, a tiltling between two knights in a tournament encounter.
