Plate 2-Daalder from the Nicobar Shipwreck (1787) Item 1 of 2

One of very few famous shipwrecks of the Danish East India Company, the Nicobar was outbound to India with a load of copper plate money from Sweden. The Nicobar never reached its destination: After stopping at False Bay (South Africa) to replenish supplies and offload sick crew, the ship left again on July 10,1783, and ran aground in a storm that night. The wreck was rediscovered in 1987 by local fishermen, who salvaged some of the copper plate money, the bulk of which were sold by Ponterio & Associates in California.

We currently have 3 plate money pieces on auction, 2 x 2-Daalder Pieces and a 4-Daalder piece (The book shown below is not included).

You are bidding on the first of the 2-Daalder pieces. It was clearly affected by the years under the sea and shows very light corner stamps with the lettering and date not visible. It measures 180 mm x 140 mm and weighs 1.10 kilogram.
