Description:
Makes loose clumps of erect stems with fleshy, bluish-green leaves. Large blue or purple, bell-shaped flowers, opening from pale, balloon-like buds in summer. The plants emerge late in spring.

Cultivation:
Moist, well drained soil in part shade or full sun.

Propagation:
The seeds should be sown on the soil surface in either spring or summer. They have a preference for a rich and moist soil, and like to grow in sunny or partially shaded areas of the garden that have good drainage.

Design and Other Uses:
The root is used extensively in Asia as a medicinal herb in the treatment of coughs and colds and as an anti-inflammatory.
